A Heart for Naco: Reflections from a Mission Trip

Spending time in Naco, Mexico, was a powerful reminder of the beauty of connection, the richness of culture, and the unifying power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Just a short drive from Sierra Vista, Arizona, Naco is a border town with a unique blend of cultures, histories, and spiritual needs. Despite living nearby, I had never truly taken the time to get to know the people and their stories. This trip changed that. We had the privilege of visiting Iglesia Cristiana de Naco (Naco Christian Church), a church with two campuses divided by the U.S.-Mexico border, under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Jesse Wood.

The warmth and hospitality of the people in Naco were striking. Whether walking the streets, visiting local shops, or sharing in worship, it was easy to engage in genuine conversations. I was especially moved by the openness of shop owners like Arturo, who eagerly shared his testimony of coming to faith through a street preacher. The sense of community was palpable—neighbors looking out for one another, shopkeepers willing to go the extra mile to meet needs, and church members embracing one another like family.

Worshiping with the congregations on both sides of the border was a highlight. Despite the language barrier, the joy in the music and fellowship was unmistakable. I connected with local worship leaders whose passion for music and ministry was inspiring.

Yet, the region also carries deep struggles. I witnessed firsthand the spiritual darkness that lingers—whether through the presence of drugs or the strong cultural grip of toxic spiritual and syncretistic Christian traditions, which sometimes makes Gospel conversations complex.

And yet, even in the face of these challenges, God’s light is shining. As our team witnessed several people on the streets of Naco inviting them to church, we had three people testify to a belief in Christ for the first time. And we prayed with many more for family issues, work-related problems, and so much more.

The churches in Naco, under the leadership of Pastor Jesse Wood, are faithfully serving both sides of the border. Their commitment to being the hands and feet of Jesus in this community is both humbling and inspiring.

As I reflect on my time in Naco, I am filled with gratitude and a growing sense of calling. The experience deepened my desire to invest in this community—my neighbors to the south. There are many ways that we can come alongside their ministries and support the Kingdom building work. I think the most important ministry need is simply to be present and encouraging. I am excited to see how God continues to move in Naco and how He might use me to be part of that story.
